Orlando Tercero, 23, a former Binghamton University nursing student, was found guilty of killing Westbury native Haley Anderson, 22, in March last year. He will face up to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced.

No sentencing date has been set.

Tercero, who is a citizen of both the United States and Nicaragua, still faces a second-degree murder charge in Broome County, though Nicaraguan officials have so far refused to extradite him back to the country prior to the conclusion of his trial.

The judge found Tercero guilty of strangling Anderson to death on March 8, 2018, at his apartment on Oak Street in Binghamton. The two had reportedly been in an “on-and-off” relationship for approximately a year, though Anderson balked when Tercero sought a more serious relationship.

Following the murder, Tercero managed to evade authorities for five days before he was detained on March 13, 2018, and brought to a prison in El Chipote.

Tercero’s trial began on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and was steamed to Anderson’s family in Broome County. Defense attorneys only presented one witness, who reportedly conducted a psychiatric evaluation of Tercero and argued that he was not violent and was allegedly provoked.

“We saw something that we haven't seen before, but we saw two governments working together, law enforcement agencies working together," Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell said, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin. "Although not what we wanted, we wanted to have the trial here, but we saw justice take place in a courtroom on an international stage."
